These guides cover talech Register and related POS equipment. Paytura is your merchant services partner; talech provides the register software and device support referenced in these articles.
Ensuring your network setup meets our requirements is important to keep your POS devices running smoothly. This article will help you verify that your network is properly configured.

General network recommendations
The following are general best practices for your internet network overall.
- Your POS system should have its own dedicated network, it should not be shared with any other devices – especially customers. LAN is recommended but properly configured VLAN is acceptable.
- LAN is recommended but properly configured VLAN is acceptable.
- Guaranteed minimum bandwidth of 10Mbps down and minimum of 5Mbps up.
- Avoid connecting talech equipment to the internet router/gateway from your ISP. These devices are not recommended for this use and are not supported by talech.
- Best practice would be to set static IP addresses on your peripheral hardware or any other device that is not wired directly to your payment device if you are having connection issues.
Internet type (Cable/DSL/Fiber/Other)
We recommend using Cable or Fiber internet.
We do not recommend using:
- Satellite
- Line-of-Sight
- DSL
Internet speed
You can perform a speed test by using the device’s browser on your network and use the search term speed test. Google and Bing allow tests to be completed within the search engine. Specific speed requirements are listed below.
- Minimum of 10Mbps down at all times.
- Minimum of 5Mbps up at all times.

POS Network recommendations
The following are the recommendations for your point-of-sale (POS) device(s).
- Should all be contained to their own LAN or VLAN with dedicated IP address pool not shared with other networks.
- Minimum bandwidth should always be available regardless of other services using the same internet connection.
- Static IP addresses should be configured via router reservation (following manufacturer recommendations or by talech if Pronto) or individual device configuration by following the setup article for your device.
Wi-Fi specific
If you are using a Wi-Fi network, the following are the recommendations for configuring your network.
- A Wi-Fi Signal strength of at least -60dBm in all areas where Wi-Fi will be used, a Wi-Fi channel not over saturated by other networks. Wide bandwidth channels are not recommended.
- Wi-Fi networks should be at least WPA2 AES encryption.
- Limit access points to no more than 10 devices. An access point is the networking device that allows Wi-Fi devices to connect to your wired network.
- Mesh Wi-Fi access points are preferred. A mesh network is one that utilizes a mesh Wi-Fi router and corresponding nodes (Wi-Fi hubs) that are all managed via the mesh router.
- Survey area to ensure Wi-Fi channel(s) are not congested with other networks.

Network Troubleshooting
For any network issues you are experiencing, try these steps to resolve.
- Record your Wi-Fi download and upload speed by doing a speed test. Perform the speed test from the location where you most frequently use register equipment for accurate results.
- Go to Google or Bing.
- Use search term speed test. Both Google and Bing allow speed tests within the browser.
- Record the hard-wired speed. You can do this by connecting a computer or laptop via ethernet cable directly to your internet gateway. Be sure to disable the Wi-Fi on your device. Open a browser and navigate to a search engine to perform another speed test.
- Using the internet speed requirements in the Internet Speed section above, confirm that your business has the appropriate bandwidth for the number of devices on the network. If not, we recommend the following:
- Forget the network on any devices that are not strictly necessary.
- Contact your Wi-Fi provider to report and rectify the loss of speed.
| Important! The number of devices will require network bandwidth to properly provide them with the speeds necessary to function. For example, 2 talech Registers will require 20mbs of download and upload because the speed requirements stack incrementally. Devices such as cameras, music systems, TV’s employee phones, customer phones, etc., on the same network pull bandwidth away from the total speeds being recorded. If talech devices do not receive their necessary speeds, then freezing and crashing can occur during app navigation and processing payments. |

Facility readiness checklist
Use this checklist as a starting point to determine if you have the correct set up for your business’ internet network.- Is there a network specifically for the POS?
If yes
If no
Ensure the existing network meets the requirements outlined in this article in the above sections.
Please get in contact with your ISP to set up a dedicated network for the POS.
- Is there a Guest network serviced by the same internet connection?
If yes
If no
Is the Guest network throttled? (Un-throttled guest Wi-Fi may significantly impact the POS during peak hours)
Not recommended. Guest devices should never be able to reach POS hardware such as printers, card readers, or iPads. It’s recommended that you set up a Guest network if you will be providing Wi-Fi to your customers.
-
Is the Guest Wi-Fi using a separate physical LAN and access points?
If yes
If no
Great!
Operating Guest Wi-Fi on the same network as the POS can lead to overloading the access points. Too many customer devices can bump POS devices off the access point.
-
Is the Guest Wi-Fi using a different IP address range from that of the POS?
If yes
If no
Great.
Not recommended. Guest devices should never be able to reach POS hardware such as printers, card readers, or iPads.
-
Do you have electrical outlets available at all locations they are needed (i.e., where the printers are needed, and where the POS studio)
If yes
If no
Ensure existing network meets requirements
Get in contact with a professional to install these for you.
-
Do you have ethernet connections available at all appropriate points for your hardware that needs it?
If yes
If no
Great.
Get in contact with a professional to install these for you.
-
Is the wireless coverage area >1500 Sq Ft?
If yes
If no
Access points may be required if wireless devices will be taken > 60 ft. from the Wi-Fi router.
One router with Wi-Fi located over the area, unobstructed by walls or floors, within 60 feet of the center of the room should be sufficient. Confirm with tests.
