PIN debit processing is available for US Elavon merchants using supported card readers. With talech you can customize the behavior of the card reader when a debit card is used at the point of sale.

Note: PIN debit processing is currently only available for US merchants who are processing payments through Elavon and are using one of the following card readers:
  • Ingenico Link2500
  • Lane 3000
Important! When pin debit is enabled, auto settlement is required. This setting can be configured by Elavon.

This setting is located on the talech Register in Back Office > Settings > General > Payment > Debit Type and consists of 3 options.

  1. None/No Preference (Default)
  2. US Common Debit
  3. Global Network

Preference Payment Behavior
None Prompt both Global and US Debit options to give cardholders a choice.
US Common Debit US Debit- Process debit card on PIN preference network (will require customer to enter the PIN).
Global Network
Process debit card on the debit signature network (allows the customer to sign instead of entering PIN).

The table below showcases an at-a-glance explanation of the settings and resulting card reader behavior.

Debit Preference Card Reader Behavior
None/No Preference Upon insertion of a debit card, the reader will prompt the cardholder to choose between US Common Debit or Global Network (Visa, Mastercard, etc.).
US Common Debit
The card reader will auto-select US Common Debit and the payment will be processed as a debit.
  • The PIN will be required
  • Tips are not supported
  • Refunds are not supported (be prepared to offer an alternative refund such as store credit, cashback, or refund without receipt)
Global Network
The card reader will auto-select Global Network and the payment will be processed similarly to a credit transaction.
  • Signature is supported
  • Tips are supported

*Disclaimer* Some Credit and Debit cards are configured by the issuer as strictly PIN-preference and cannot be run through a signature network. With cards like this, the cardholder will always have to provide their PIN to proceed with the transaction. If the cardholder does not know their PIN, the POS operator will need to manually key in the card number or insert the card into the reader upside down three times. After three failed EMV chip reads, the card reader will fall back to swipe entry, at which point, the card’s magnetic stripe can be used instead of the chip, allowing the customer to avoid the PIN entry.
