Weak passwords can make it easy for an intruder to access your account, while strong passwords are considered harder to crack.  
 

This article will outline the best practices for choosing a strong, secure password or passphrase for your account. 

In this article 

A weak password

  • Contains less than seven characters   
  • Includes your username, real name, or company name.   
  • Includes a complete dictionary word. For example, Password is a weak password.   
Note: Avoid these common pitfalls: Four-digit years, sports references, and keyboard patterns or sequences (i.e., qwerty, asdf, 123456, abc, abc123).

A strong password

  • Contains eight characters or more.   
  • Doesn’t contain your username, real name, or company name.   
  • Doesn’t contain a complete dictionary word.   
  • Is completely different than previous passwords. Passwords with increasing numbers (Password1, Password2, Password3…) are not strong.   
  • Contains characters from each of the following four groups:   
Group   
Examples   
Uppercase letters   
A, B, C …   
Lowercase letters   
a, b, c …   
Numerals   
0, 1,2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9   
Symbols found on the keyboard            
` ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + - = { } | \ : " ; ' < > ? , . /   
 

A password can meet most of the conditions of a strong password and still be weak. For Example:   

  • Delight5T! is a weak password even though it meets the conditions.   
  • D!eliFgh5t is a strong password because the word is combined with symbols, numbers, and other letters.   

Use a phrase

For an even more secure password, use a phrase! To use a phrase as a password,  string random words together with spaces in between. The phrase does not need to be grammatically correct and should not be based on a common phrase.  

Your password phrase should be easy for you to remember, but hard for hackers to guess.  

Do:  

  • Choose random words 
  • Five words phrases are better than four 
  • Add in at least one number to meet the requirements 

Example of a strong password phrase: cats drums incline meth0d s0lved 

Don’t:  

  • Use a popular phrase or saying 
  • Use song lyrics 
  • Use your name or birthdate 
  • Use keyboard patterns (i.e., qwerty, asdf, 123456, abc, abc123, etc.) 

Example of bad password phrase: if the shoe fits 123

Forgot password? 

If you forgot your password or are having difficulties with a password, you can use the password reset option in talech.com. Simply visit talech.com and click on Log In, then click on Forgot Password, enter your email address and click Confirm.   

A password email will be sent to the account owner's email address. Make sure to choose a new, secure passphrase that you can remember and use.
