Printer Not Available or Write Port Exception
This is an error that can occur when there is a working connection, but it is not available in the app. There are a number of reasons this can occur:
- Printer paper is low or out.
- Printer has a new IP address, and the app has an old one.
- The iPad is not connected to the printer’s network.
- The printer is using a static address that doesn’t match the network’s address.
To troubleshoot the error, follow these steps:
- Check the printer for any error lights.
- Check the paper status for the printer.
- Power the printer off/on to refresh the printer’s network information.
- Access the app’s settings. Go to the register app Back Office > Settings > Printers and hit the auto detect button.
- Get an IP print from the printer to confirm its IP address, gateway address and if it’s using DHCP or static.
- Go into the iPad’s Settings > Wi-Fi > and tap on the network with a blue check mark in its name.
- Compare the iPad’s router address to the printer’s gateway address.
- Restart iPad and printer if router address to the printer's gateway address match.
- If your iPad has recently been updated to iOS 14 or over, please make sure your Bluetooth and Local Network permissions are enabled by going to the iPads Settings > Privacy > toggle on Bluetooth > Local Network.

Not connecting to talech
This can also come up as an error 'No Host Connection' or 'Did Not Obtain' error.
If the guide Set up your printer in talech is unsuccessful there are a few things that you can try.
Print an IP address and manually insert it to talech
Please note that Bluetooth printers will not have IP addresses, you can learn more about Star Micronics Bluetooth Troubleshooting.
- Turn the printer off.
- Hold the FEED button.
- Switch on the power.
- Continue to hold the feed button for 3 seconds if SP700 or 5 seconds if TSP100.
- A small slip of paper should print off.
You should have the option to insert the IP address manually on the Printers Management page by hitting the plus button on the top right of the screen.
This will bring you a new page in which you can manually input the IP address and once you hit save the printer should connect.
If the IP address is 000.00.00.00 or manually adding does not work.
A 0 IP read means that the printer is not connected to the network. Please check that your internet network is working correctly with another device, we recommend going to speedtest.net and testing the speeds to ensure that they are acceptable. Learn more about talech Network Requirements and Recommendations.
Turn off the printer wait for 30 seconds and turn it on again, once it is on again try to print an IP address again.
Ensure that the cable connecting the printer to the modem is plugged in, there is no visible damage, once this has been checked change the ports that the cable is plugged into. There should be more than one option on the modem or wall, switching them should resolve the issue.
If this is unsuccessful
Reboot the network at the modem itself. Allow the router to turn off entirely then turn it on. Ensure
If the printer is not displaying any other problems, we recommend trying a different Ethernet cable or port to connect to the network.

Printer isn't printing receipts
Your printer may be working when you do test prints but not printing your receipts. This usually means that there are just some settings that need to be changed.
Is it set as a custom receipt printer
In the register go to Back Office > Settings > Printers and ensure that the correct printer is assigned as the Customer Receipt Printer.
If there are multiple printers on your network and you are unsure as to which is which you can select the printer and do a test print.

Printing blank paper
If your printer is printing blank paper
Firstly, check that the printer has sufficient and correct paper
TSP100, mC-Print3 - Thermal printers need thermal paper that will have a slight sheen on it, if you scratch it with a fingernail, it will leave a mark. Check the paper is inserted correctly.
SP700 - Impact printers need impact paper, you can check this by touching the paper, it will be slightly rough to the touch. Impact paper can be up to 3 ply, any more than that and there may be issues with the printing. Check the paper is inserted correctly.
Check the printing mechanism
For thermal printers, if the printer is hotter than usual to the touch or there is a burning smell the thermal head may have burned out. This will require replacement, please contact whoever your hardware provider is.
For impact printers, since these printers use ink, it is possible that the ink ribbon has run out. Check the last prints from the printer, if they are fading then it is most likely an ink ribbon replacement. You can order an ink ribbon from online retailers.

Assigning a static IP address
You may be advised to assign a static IP address to your printer if there are issues with the network assigning new IP addresses to your printer regularly (referred to as DHCP).
Improper network settings will cause the printer to be unavailable to the register application. If you are not comfortable changing the settings on your printer or do not have time to troubleshoot if something goes wrong, please utilize an IT professional service.
For the TSP100-series printers, configuration is performed through a command-line-based tool called telnet. Other models such as the SP700 are configured using a web browser interface.
- Obtain the current IP address of the printer. Hold the FEED button while powering on the printer for 3-5 seconds. You can locate the IP address under the Current IP Parameters Status section on the printout.
- Connect to the printer using the correct interface: telnet for the TSP100, web browser for the SP700. For the web browser option, you simply go to your browser on your computer or device (it may be easier on a computer) and type in the IP address obtained above.
- Select log in from the list of options on the left and log in using the username: root and password: public.
- Once you have logged in you can set the IP as static by selecting IP Parameters under the Network Configuration heading on the left of the screen, then select Static. Edit the IP address to the desired address outside of the DHCP scope of your router. Enter the subnet mask and gateway given in the test print from step 1 above. The range of your router can be found in the router's configuration interface or in the router's documentation.
- Save the setting and reboot the printer.
Please note: Once the configuration has been updated, you will need to update the IP in talech as well. You can learn more about Set up your printer in talech.
