For some businesses, embedding data onto a barcode--price, weight, SKU/PLU, quantity--is vital to ensuring the right price is charged for the right amount of product. Particularly common in delicatessens, any business selling weighted or bulk items can benefit from embedded barcodes.
You can set up your embedded barcode in talech Register via Back Office.

| Important! The talech Register app can only support UPC-A (12 digits) and EAN-13 (13 digits) barcodes for this feature. |
Barcode numbering
The talech Register app and Socket CHS scanner does not support EAN-13 or UPC-A (12-digit) barcodes that start with 0 (zero). The Socket CHS scanner cannot correctly scan EAN-13 barcodes that start with a zero because the operating system cannot distinguish them from UPC-A barcodes. Since the operating system doesn’t have a built-in way to tell them apart, it may misinterpret the barcode type, causing scanning errors or incorrect data handling.
| Our recommended workaround is to replace any zeros at the start of all barcodes with a flag number 1-9. This enables the external reader to scan the leading identifying number, which the iPad camera scanner will also be able to scan. |

Enable embedded barcodes
- Navigate to Back Office > Settings > General > Barcode.
- At the top, toggle the Embedded Barcodes setting to ON (the slider turns blue). Once enabled, the register will look for an identifier at the start of the barcode to determine if this barcode includes embedded data or not.

Identifier
The identifier at the start of the barcode is used to distinguish whether a barcode has embedded information or not. Many scales allow for affixing one or more digits at the beginning of generated barcodes. If you wish to include multiple values, use commas to separate them.
Format
Different barcodes contain different length of digits for values. The data and how it populates is shown in the table below.

Determine Quantity By
Determine if you want your barcode to contain information on the quantity or not, and what that information should be. The options are outlined in the table below.

Helpful tips and info
- Prices are rounded to 2 decimal places.
- The product base price cannot be set to $0 or have a variable price. Embedded barcodes perform the price calculation automatically, as opposed to requiring manual input. If the base price varies daily/weekly/etc., the recommendation is to apply a discount or make the product non-embedded.
- When configuring products with a weight-embedded barcode, a unit (pounds, yards, ounces, etc.) must be applied within the product details.
- When Do not determine quantity (Always 1) is selected in the Determine Quantity By settings, the following will occur based on how the barcode is configured:
- Based on Price (P) identifier
- Quantity = 1
- Price = Price in the barcode
- Based on Weight (W) identifier
- Quantity = 1
- Price = Base price of the product
- Based on Quantity (Q) identifier (NOT RECOMMENDED)
- Quantity = Quantity in the barcode
- Price = Quantity in the barcode × base price of the product
- Based on Price (P) identifier
